February update

I start February energised after the fabulous 2nd ELT Freelancers’ Awayday in Oxford at the end of last month.

It was organised by Karen White of @KarenWhiteInk and Helen Holwill and took place at the Hawkwell Hotel in Iffley, Oxford.

In the morning, Sophie O’Rourke and her colleagues from emc design gave a fascinating insight into how designers, media researchers and editors can work smarter.

In addition to this, there were two workshop slots with ten topics to discuss everything from creating a digital brand to adapting to working from home. I am now a new face on Twitter! See @trishburrowelt and share your thoughts and encourage me to learn more. You can also find out more about the event by following ELT Freelancers.

To end the day, Lorna Membury and Charlotte Webb from OUP presented on their new workflow designed to facilitate lean management of the content and copy editing process.

The event was a brilliant way to connect and reconnect with ELT colleagues old and new and had ample space for discussions over coffee and lunch and then at the end-of-day drinks event sponsored by OUP. It was a sell out so I advise booking early for the 2017 event.

See you next January!

A ten-week Teacher Training course for recently qualified teachers of Young Learners

Ahead of the return to school for most teachers and young learners, I am pleased to share a ten-week initial Teacher Training course for recently qualified teachers of children and young teenagers. I wrote this when I was still working as a Teacher Trainer and have updated it to place it on my blog.

First of all, I am sharing the pre-course information that can be given to trainees either ahead of or at the start of the course: YLs Initial ten-week Teacher Training course – overview

Content editing

Feeling pleased with myself after meeting a looming deadline for a content edit of a Lower Secondary course. It was really interesting work and the writer had done a good job of revising the draft so it was mainly a case of formatting the text and fleshing out the art and photo briefs. Now back at the grindstone doing some content mapping of a Primary course against YL can-do descriptors.

Content editing

It’s been a busy week content editing a Primary course to produce a new version of an existing course for Egypt. It was a steep learning curve, but once I got into it I really enjoyed it and I think the pupils will too as the team has really revamped the stories. I’m spending some time this weekend catching up on the content mapping that is ongoing.
